Don’t we reward athletes, doctors, lawyers, and business executives according to their merit and not by democratic vote? Should our leaders be chosen the same way, as Plato suggests? Why or why not?

Selecting political leaders based on merit is a highly valuable suggestion since the democratic process has proven to be highly ideological or partisan. Democracy, particularly its modern forms, is an inherently flawed process. Voting is driven by significant bias, impulsive decision-making and often lacks evaluation of candidates it is meant to. Political scientists agree that the modern democracy has numerous flaws and can be “largely random events.” A merit-based system creates a buffer by weeding out unqualified candidates, ensuring competency, and finding leaders with attributes to make long-term decisions. In a democracy, voters often fail to understand cause and effect long-term contexts, which can be mitigated by a merit-based approach.
