According to Plato’s famous idea, a just society can be built emphasizing merit and reason. The existence of Plato’s just society is impossible without attempts to make people adhere to accepted standards. It limits citizens’ opportunity to express their individual perspectives and differentiate themselves from the crowd since Plato sees justice in order, system, strong hierarchical structures, and clear distribution of roles. To me, the beneficial outcomes of implementing Plato’s views into practice may include the lack of extreme power imbalance. At the same time, in Plato’s society, any attempts to deviate from the rules and pursue one’s personal goals would be strongly discouraged, thus making nonconformist behaviors a crime. Since not all people are willing to try hard to achieve the common good, Plato’s model would not help all citizens to reach their full potential.
Explain Plato’s Utopian vision for a just society. In your view, what would be some of the beneficial or harmful effects of a society based solely on merit, as Plato proposed?
