Don’t we reward athletes, doctors, lawyers, and business executives according to their merit and not by democratic vote? Should our leaders be chosen the same way, as Plato suggests? Why or why not?

In many instances, we reward professionals representing our society and fulfill important functions according to their merit and actual achievements instead of summarizing all people’s opinions about such specialists and their abilities. As Plato suggests, children with the leadership potential can become the representatives of the guardians (the upper class) and receive the necessary training in philosophy and other areas of knowledge. In general, Plato offers a merit-based approach to selecting leaders that should be implemented since it helps evaluate people’s moral values and abilities. The leaders should be chosen based on merit since this approach solves problems related to family ties in the succession of power. Also, it helps to distinguish between the most suitable people and those having unlimited resources and opportunities.
