Explain Plato’s Utopian vision for a just society. In your view, what would be some of the beneficial or harmful effects of a society based solely on merit, as Plato proposed?

Plato’s Just society would be a perfectly balanced utopia on all levels. Society would be divided into three classes of guardians, auxiliaries, and craftsmen, with each performing key duties and loving their jobs while remaining equal in status. Plato’s idea of a just society consists of individuals fulfilling their role to the state and themselves and not acting against one’s nature. It is a highly structured and potentially totalitarian society. Still, Plato believed that doing what one’s talent and soul belong to, accepting that status through the Myth of Metals, will create a perfect efficient state. This can have a positive effect on society by creating a structure by eliminating conflict and significant inequality currently persistent in a democratic society. However, it is also negative since people are imperfect, can change their preferences, and freedom is necessary for full personal growth even if one is in a merited profession.
