I have realized that nearly half of the states in the US were named from indigenous words. The majority of the state names’ original names were literally a description of the landmass, with others being a description of the people and others being names of places within an indigenous context. Many indigenous languages arose from subcategories and families that I had never known from the beginning.
Engaging in this research has been fascinating as the majority of the original state names were only manipulated and developed into their present names. I am glad that this research has opened my eyes to view the indigenous languages in the US from a different perspective that will be vital in the future analysis of the history of the United States. In addition, the knowledge acquired will enhance my understanding of the US present culture.
