What is the obligation of a citizen in a country which is pursuing a war that he or she feels to be bad policy? For example, there were many Americans who opposed our entry into World War I. But once war had been declared, they supported the war effort because they felt that it was the right of the majority to decide to go to war and that once the decision was made, as members of society, they were bound to support the war effort. What if you think the majority is wrong?

An important decision or policy, such as a country’s participation in the war, presents a combination of many factors. Even though the government’s main purpose is to protect the country’s population, the population’s opinion on such important decisions is often disregarded. While moral courage allows individuals to follow their moral codes despite other people’s concerns, there are several reasons why moral courage could not substitute for an individual’s duty to support the war effort.

In general, the war presents many threats to an individual’s life that overpower his moral views and courage. While starting a war in conditions of modern society is complicated by high media coverage and the population’s awareness of the political climate, governments used certain measures to draw populations’ support in previous wars. One of the most used governmental techniques was the enemy’s demonization, which convinced the population about the righteousness of war’s purpose. With the addition of instilling fear for the safety of close ones, the governmental measures cultivated the commitment to homeland defense in most of the population.

In conclusion, the government often forces people to fulfill their duty despite their personal views. Therefore, in situations where one thinks that the majority is wrong, it is necessary to question the nature of the majority’s commitment to the goal, as it might be manipulated or forced. Even though participation in war is a citizen’s obligation, the individual’s level of commitment and moral views should not be manipulated.
