The researchers used an anti-ZNT1 (Zinc transporter 1) monoclonal antibody in many of their experiments. What is a monoclonal antibody and why is it used?

Monoclonal antibodies are antibodies of the human immune system produced from a single progenitor cell clone. This does not mean that all antibodies are produced from only one physical cell, but it does mean that only one type of immune cell is used to produce them. What is unique about the use of monoclonal antibodies is that they can be produced in response to almost any natural antigen. They are used in research because they are a pure substance rather than a multi-component mixture, which means their activity can be studied precisely.
