I find the term “unfreedom” to be beneficial when it comes to slavery. The fact is that with the recent proliferation of discussions surrounding the topic of slavery, more and more new meanings have been given to the term. Not to mention the fact that “slavery” can be quite different. For example, it may be domestic slavery, forced labor, indentured servitude, or serfdom. All of these concepts are given their meanings by different people because what one would call slavery may not be so for another.
In addition, the concept of unfreedom can be much broader than that of slavery. For example, in the historical perspective of slavery in the United States, slaves were often formally released. However, they were forced by various means to continue working for their masters. In this way, one was rid of slavery but continued to be sidelined as unfree. Consequently, the latter term is helpful to cover a broader range of problems and achieve a unified understanding.
