The nine hallmarks of aging are mitochondrial dysfunction, genomic instability, deregulated nutrient-sensing, epigenetic alterations, stem cell exhaustion, cellular senescence, loss of proteostasis, telomere attrition, and altered intercellular communication. Epigenetic alterations contribute to aging by affecting diverse genes in the body. Some epigenetic alterations are methylation and acetylation of genetic material, chromatin remodeling, histone modifications, and post-translational changes.

Epigenetic alterations affect the expression of genes and physiological activities of methylases, acetylases, methyltransferases, and chromatin remodeling. The cumulative effects of altered functions of genes contribute to inefficient physiological functions and progressive aging.
