“When I am laid in earth (Dido’s Lament)” performed by Emma Kirkby using baroque instruments certainly lends authenticity to the sound of the orchestra. The use of old-fashioned acoustic stringed instruments gives Purcell’s opera a natural feel. The subdued sound of baroque string arrangements, compared to a powerful string orchestra, lends a special melancholic intonation to the music. This organic sound, however, will leave indifferent a person accustomed to classical opera with grandiose orchestral arrangements.
