Mitochondria contribute to aging via the mechanism of redox reactions that they undertake in their membranes. Redox reactions of mitochondria generate free radicals, which cause oxidative stress in cells, tissues, and organs, leading to progressing aging. The oxidative phosphorylation and the electron transport chain in mitochondria contribute to the accumulation of free radicals in the body. Oxidative stress induced by free radicals damages genetic materials, cells, tissues, and organs, leading to the aging process. Also, oxidative stress reduces the replicative infidelity of genes and the translation of proteins in cells.
