“Ah! Belinda” and “When I am laid in earth” are arias using ground bass as a harmonic technique. The logic of this technique consists in placing a constantly repeating melody in the bass register, on top of which additional chords and harmonies are already superimposed. This technique is often used in popular music, in particular in rock and funk.

Queen’s hit songs “Another One Bites the Dust” and “Under Pressure” are based on a repetitive bass riff over which the rest of the song’s melodic structure is organized. David Bowie’s anthem “Heroes” also uses a repetitive looped bass riff overlaid with additional melodies, guitar, and synth arrangements.
