I expect that British government officials would find satiric “A Modest Proposal” as an attack on British policy, which accuses its poor treatment of Irish people and cruel domination of protestants over papists. Maybe the government would start to think about changing the mode of their politics toward the Irish people, paying attention to Swift’s words about taking measures in other countries, but this is unlikely. Irish readers, in my opinion, would be even more terrified of “A Modest Proposal” as it suggests them selling their children as food to aristocrats (however, satirically) during the time of overpopulation, poverty, and famine.
