Explain why each of the following groups might have been offended by the essay “A Modest Proposal” by Swift: women, Catholics, butchers, the poor.

Women might be offended while reading this essay because they should sell their children to earn money for a living; the same is for poor people. Moreover, Swift wrote that 25% of 20 000 children who should remain alive must be males to fertilize 75% of females; thus, “one man would be sufficient to serve four females.” He imagines women as just objects to produce generations, as cattle do.

Catholics may be offended because their children should be sold, so the number of papists would be decreased, which is suitable for the population in Swift’s view. From my perspective, butchers may be offended because they want to buy and cut Irish children with knives. They also serve the desires of aristocrats and protestants, which might be offensive to catholic butchers. The listed arguments might be considered only if the population would take this essay seriously.
