Why was educating women “dangerous”? Did women’s education lead to the consequence expected?

The education of women presented them with diverse opportunities for developing their careers, becoming independent from family members, as well as allowing them to become well-rounded individuals. The perception that educating women could be dangerous was attributed to the misconception that the latter are untrustworthy, and their educational liberation could lead to unwanted shifts in the social and political structures. As seen from the example of Antoinette Brown, who made a demand to become an ordained minister and a preacher, the education of women made them freer in having their own opinions and aspirations. The challenge that Brown posed to the religious establishment was also echoed in the consistent attempts of women to become licensed doctors . However, keeping the regular medical profession male was one of the methods that doctors used for establishing their legitimacy and distinguish their roles amidst midwives or nurses.

Apart from the professional development of women as a consequence of broadening education, the demands for divorce increased. Previously, difficulties in marriage were resolved by partners moving separately. However, the increased education and self-awareness of women made them more active in demanding a divorce, which made them even more ‘dangerous.’ Separations led to the later sexual liberation of women and their exploration of personal interests and preferences. Prior to the 1960s, sexual imagery of women was defined as obscenity. However, the sexual liberation of both men and women led to the creation of various subcultures, such as the Hippies, who embraced free love and practiced spiritual beliefs. It is also imperative to mention the role of the birth control pill in the liberation of women as it allowed them to be more sexually active without the risk of getting pregnant and having to marry.
