Columbia Law School is among the professional graduate schools of Columbia University and has been and still is, one of the country’s prestigious law schools.
It has attained prestige over time due to its continuous outstanding performance, therefore, has been ranked among the top five in the world. This year, 2008 it has been ranked position four. (Kelly, 2008).
Admission to Columbia Law School is highly selective because of its competencies. It has also produced preeminent leaders (for instance, the two Presidents of the U.S-Teddy Roosevelt and Franklin D Roosevelt, and 8 Justices of the Supreme Court of the U.S.). (Kelly, 2008).
Columbia Law School is acclaimed in international law and intellectual property because of its exemplary teaching and scholarship. The other areas which include criminal law, constitutional law, legal philosophy, and critical race theory are also very strong. It also provides the best corporate law hence has many alumni employed in the top law firms in the nation. (Office of JD Admissions, 2008).
Columbia Law School has enough resources and facilities necessary for the students; it owns the second-largest academic law library in the U.S. which has enough books and other materials. It has also developed alliances and dual degree programs with overseas laws schools. It runs great clinical programs that contribute to the community.
Columbia Law School has a great dean, David M. Schizer who has worked hard to improve it. The school has currently hired 22 new faculties hence enlarging course offerings, reducing class size, and enhancing opportunities for mentorship between faculty and students. (Office of JD Admissions, 2008).
Columbia Law School has also emphasized its commitment to public service by having the Center for Public Interest Law. The center helps individual students in discovering the role of a public interest lawyer in the academic world, NGOs, government agencies, international human rights organizations, and service in private law firms. It provides information, counseling, and guidance on long-lasting jobs, semester and summer internships among others. (Kelly, 2008).
