In my opinion, the construction of railroads unified the nation as it created an important precedent for industry development, which contributed to the overall economic growth of the United States. The most important contribution of this construction was the provision of new opportunities for economic development and settlement of the state’s Western territories. The improvement of transcontinental transportation contributed to a decrease in prices for items since these transportation means were more efficient when compared to others and did not have the disadvantages of boats. It also promoted partnerships between different enterprises and the exchange of ideas.
Despite the issues connected to forced relocation, conflicts, and natural resources destruction, the railroad became a vital part of the United State’s economy. Issues related to railroad transportation were present as well, for example, the high fees that the farmers were charged. Due to this, the opposition to the monopoly of railroad owners, who also often owned elevators, emerged. Regardless of these issues, the railroad created opportunities for economic development.
