In my opinion, Sartre’s perspective on freedom is revolutionary, and thought-provoking for it reforms the conventional perception of the concept. In particular, I find interesting Sartre’s interpretation of freedom in terms of individual choices and self-deception. I agree that a person is inherently free when given the right to select one’s place in life. One’s liberty reaches its peak when an individual seeks an authentic life, pondering over personal reasons for existence rather than blindly conforming to the societal norms. Sartre’s view on conformity, however, needs to be examined carefully. By associating freedom with disconfirmation, it is possible to justify political oppression and lack of political freedom in countries with non-democratic order.
