The Cold war was evidently one of the more challenging periods in American history. Causing a steep increase in the extent of tension within the American society, the Cold War created a very hostile environment for American residents. However, from the perspective of the developing notion of freedom, the specified political choices were fully justified as the defense mechanism against the threat of Communist ideas, which were seen as the ultimate threat to the principles of democracy.

Thus, the consequences of the Cold War included redefining the notions of freedom and slavery toward a looser concept of the relationship of an individual to the state. Implying that freedom of speech and thought were central to the idea of equal and democratic rights, the U.S. values shaping the foreign policy led to viewing the Cold War as the tool for keeping the freedoms of American citizens intact.
