It is a Latin American political ideology that focuses on the ties between states and their indigenous nations. In Mexico, Indigenismo meant a celebration and reintegration of indigenous cultures into the national history. The ideology was developed at the end of the nineteenth century and was widespread in Mexico throughout the twentieth century as well. The place of indigenous people and cultures was elevated with the help of many activities, such as political and land reforms, education programs, and art projects. After the Mexican Revolution, the previously supported European model was disregarded. In a contrast, the government promised to integrate indigenous people who were exploited and underrepresented into the Mexican state. The main critique of these policies was its focus on indigenous communities over other Mexican citizens and its underdeveloped approach to challenging the damaging hierarchy.
