It is a secret organization that was established in the Philippines in 1892. Katipunan opposed colonization and acted to thwart or delay Spain’s activities. When Andrés Bonifacio led the organization, it participated in armed revolts against Spain. Katipunan’s membership numbers remained undisclosed, with estimates between fifteen thousand to four hundred thousand people. Emilio Aguinaldo was another distinguished member of the organization – he participated in the Philippine Revolution in 1896-1898 as the leader of the forces against Spain. The US also has a stake in the conflict between Spain and the Philippines, and the Western country offered its help to the colony and restore its independence. The activity of Katipunan resulted in the creation of the First Philippine Republic. However, its anti-colonial beliefs did not align with the politics of the US, and the two nations entered a war. To sum up, Katipunan greatly affected the Philippines’ path to freedom, although its clash with the US forces became a part of the Spanish-American war.
