How do researchers determine reliability in a study? Describe the major types of each.

Reliability of methods is a major concern of researchers, as the parameter describes whether the same answer can be obtained by using an instrument more than once. Generally speaking, research reliability is the degree to which research method produces stable and consistent results. Reliability can be tested using various techniques. First, test-retest reliability is a measure of reliability that has been obtained by conducting the same test on the same people in different time periods. Second, alternate forms reliability is conducting assessments of the same phenomena using different techniques. Third, internal consistency reliability is a test “in which each item on the scale is correlated with all other items to determine the consistency of the scale in measuring a concept.” Finally, interrater reliability is comparing the results of different assessors using the same method and the same sample group.
