José Martí was a Cuban patriot who lived in the 1850s-1890s and advocated for Cuba’s independence from Spain. In 1891, Martí wrote “Our America,” in which he rejected the values of Europe and the US and proposed that Latin American nations can live without racial disharmony. Martí also believed that Cuba was a “raceless nation” that did not need any substantial involvement from other countries. In 1895, Martí returned to Cuba from the US where he spent fourteen years living in exile. The author came back to fight for Cuba against Spain in the War of Independence. He died when facing Spanish soldiers, but his legacy inspired the revolution to continue. Martí’s work is seminal in the history of Cuba’s struggle for freedom. His opposition to both European and North American influences was rooted in the belief in strong and independent South America.
