A journalist, activist, and one of the leaders of the early feminist and Civil Rights movements in the US. As a journalist, Wells focused on the topics of inequality, racial segregation, and violence. She worked to expose the lynching of Black Americans and argued that such killings were meant as statements against Black people’s access to power in the country. At the end of the nineteenth and the first part of the twentieth century, lynching was common in the US, and almost all (90%) of its victims were Black Americans. It was a response to the shifting dynamic in the US since the Civil War led to the integration of Black people into American society. Black people, while not being slaves, could not access the same rights as white Americans. Wells became one of the creators of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Her contribution, while not always aligning with other activists, was substantial.
