For the first piece, find a work that is unclear and dense. I suggest legal briefs, political press releases, or fishing regulations. What makes the writing so difficult? How do they use verbs, how are the sentences constructed? Once you have figured out the meaning, how might you revise it? For the second piece of writing, find something that is clear, concise, where the “writer has turned hard facts and complex ideas into easy reading.” Here, I suggest sports writers, cookbook writers, and really good Wikipedia pages. What makes the writing clear? How can you emulate it in your own work?

For that assignment, I prepared three pieces of text to analyze the techniques used in them. For the first paragraph, I chose the article on fishing regulations in Oregon. More precisely, the selected web page presents information on Disabilities Hunting and Fishing permission. This text is hard to read because it consists of very long paragraphs with monotonous information. Verbs used in the text are quite simple, e.g., “is,” “must,” “may,” etc. However, the text consists of quite a specific language for fishing and many abbreviations. The main idea of the text is that people with disabilities need to get a license. If I were the editor of that page, I would make the information easier to read by adding tables, bullet points, and bright colors for the design.

The opposite case is present in the article “NFL rookie rankings 2021: A surprise top-ranked first-year, a defense-dominated top 10 and just one QB on the list,” published on ESPN. It is about sport and also has specific terms and abbreviations for football. Nevertheless, the material is presented in a very interactive way. The author uses bold/not bold letters, makes paragraphs short, divides material into lists, and puts effort into not complicating the construction of the sentences. From this text, I can take the author’s ability to present repeatable information in an engaging style. In fact, the author discusses the same information about statistics for every player from the list, but players’ profiles are significantly different in content and style.
