The narrator humiliates Robert even during the dialogue with his wife. He tries to implement black humor about the dead wife to belittle Robert. However, in doing so, the narrator only showed his personality weaknesses. The narrator is astonished to learn that his mean comments do not offend Robert. On the contrary, Robert finds ways to make offensive actions and words funny. Therefore, Robert’s kind humor compared to the cruel jokes of the narrator reveals the second character’s moral inconsistency.
