Discuss the concept of learning and motor control. Why do you think some have better, and more refined, motor skills than others? Are athletes born or made? What about neurosurgeons? Do you think that anyone and everyone can develop into a professional athlete or into a world class neurosurgeon? Does practice make perfect? Why or why not? What is the role of genetics and what is the role of environment?

Learning and motor control involve the process whereby a learner acquires new skills through practice which makes them succeed in achieving their desired movement. It is a neurologic process that influences the ability to produce automatic voluntary movements. Motor skills differ in different people, so some people tend to have fine motor skills more than others. Some of the factors that contribute to these differences include; genetics, environment, and muscle tone. The climate in which a child is brought up highly affects their motor skills. Children brought up in an environment that encourages them to be physically active are likely to have more refined skills than less physically active ones. Individuals with solid genetics and muscle tone are also expected to have finer motor control than those with genetic weaknesses, weak muscle development, and health issues.

From the concept of learning and motor control, it is evident that athletes are made. In as much as genes play a significant role in an individual’s athletic nature, environment and training also widely contribute to athletic greatness. People are born with athletic genes, but constant practice polishes their skills, thus making them more efficient. Through hard work and preparation, any willing person can become an athlete. Similarly, neurosurgeons are made from practical training and are not born. Through thorough practice, anyone can develop into a world-class neurosurgeon even if such traits were not evident in their early training days. Exercise does not necessarily make one perfect, but it helps make one better at practicing things. Genetics plays the role of determining the motor control abilities of an individual while the environment shapes the motor control ability.
