The psychosocial aspect of female health is just as important as the management of Diabetes and Hypertension. The World Health Organization (WHO, n.d.) addresses women’s mental health facts as follows: Depressive disorders account for close to 41.9% of the disability from neuropsychiatric disorders among women compared to 29.3% among men. Leading mental health problems of the older adults are depression, organic brain syndromes and dementias. A majority are women. An estimated 80% of 50 million people affected by violent conflicts, civil wars, disasters, and displacement are women and children. Lifetime prevalence rate of violence against women ranges from 16% to 50%. At least one in five women suffer rape or attempted rape in their lifetime. Select a mental health illness as a diagnosis for a female patient, perhaps one you have encountered in the clinical setting. Describe the illness, how is it treated? What is your follow-up? Discuss how the WHO’s comprehensive mental health action plan 2013 – 2020 addresses a strategy for change in the mental health illness you selected.

Female psychosocial health is often neglected, yet related issues have immense effects as other disorders. Moreover, studies conducted by the World Health Organization indicate that women are twice more likely to experience mental health issues compared to men. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is one of the psychiatric illnesses that women face.

Statistics indicate that 10% of women do experience the condition at some point in their lives compared to only 4% of men. PTSD occurs when individuals who initially witnessed or experienced disturbing events such as physical and sexual assault continue facing related symptoms that interfere with the victim’s normal life.

Symptoms of PTSD include reliving the event through flashbacks, and the patient can sometimes experience sweating and racing of the heart. The victim also tries to avoid instances related to the traumatic event and might feel nervous and jittery when in such situations. Women experience stronger and longer symptoms compared to men before treatment or diagnosis. Common interventions for PTSD include cognitive processing therapy (CPT), which helps the victim focus and change disturbing thoughts.

Medicines such as anti-anxiety and antidepressants can also be used to manage symptoms. After diagnosis and recommendations for treatment, there should be a one month follow up to monitor the patient’s progress. One of the objectives of the Mental Health Action Plan 2013-2020 is to provide elaborate social care services in communities which imply women can get help easily. PTSD is a sensitive mental disorder that requires specialized and timely care, and taking professional services to the patients will improve the public’s mental health.
