The combination of visual pathways significantly aids in transmitting information from the retina to the brain. The two main pathways that transmit information from the retina to the initial visible cortical areas are the Tectopulvinar and geniculostrate pathways. In this case, the tectopulvinar pathway directs visual-spatial attention by guiding an individual’s eye movements. This pathway is responsible for transmitting neuronal radiations into the superior colliculus, located in the rectum. The excellent colliculus aids in orienting the viewer’s attention and gaze via head and eye movements. In case of any damages to the tectopulvinar pathway, the victim is likely to suffer from optic ataxia. This condition is characterized by spatial attention deficit and the victim’s inability to engage in hand movements that are visually guided.

The geniculostrate pathway, on the other hand, is also known as optic radiation. They are exons that move from the lateral geniculate nucleus neurons to the striate cortex. Its primary function is to transport visual information to the striate cortex through the upper and lower divisions. Any form of damage to the optic radiation causes vision loss and a visual deficit known as bitemporal hemianopsia. This condition is characterized by a missing vision in the outer half of both the right and left eyes. The partial loss of sight caused by the optic radiation damage also affects motor control, limiting an individual’s ability to move freely or reach out to objects. Therefore visual pathways also play an essential role in motor control.
