With the advent of new policies in managing the needs of victims and preventing crimes due to the promotion of criminology, the idea of introducing safe zones for vulnerable groups became increasingly popular. A group of women that belonged to the radical feminist wing made a breakthrough by establishing the first rape crisis center in Washington, D.C., in 1972. Afterward, more rape relief centers were created in other states and major cities to assist the victims of sexual offenders and prevent instances of further assaults. The introduction of rape relief centers and shelters for women that had experienced sexual assaults helped to open a new chapter in both criminology and social work by building a support system for victims.
