What is the history of victimology, and how has it developed?

The problem of victimization and, therefore, the development of victimology has begun to gain public traction in the context of criminology and the support of the victims of crimes, in general. As a field of study and science, victimology did not exist until the 1950s, when it was recognized as a legitimate field of study. The term was coined by Beniamin Mendelsohn in 1949 to make a statement about the significance of studying the problem of victimizing vulnerable groups. Afterward, victimology gained a rather strong presence in the realm of criminology. Nevertheless, the path to encouraging the support of victims and recognizing the necessity of a profound analysis of the subject matter has been doubted extensively. 1963 can be described as the landmark date in the development of victimology and the promotion of the relevant ideas as the New Zealand government established the Criminal Compensation Act that year. Currently, victimology remains an important field of study that allows preventing numerous crimes and addressing the needs of vulnerable groups.
