The first safe house for battered women was established in 1974 in Berkeley, Minnesota, and provided the refuge for women that experienced domestic violence. The identified change was followed by alterations in the legal standards for addressing the instances of domestic violence. At the same time, safe houses for women emerged in the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and several other countries.
