The anti-war protests within the Vietnam peace movement were among the most significant displays of opposition to governmental policy. 1968 was the peak of the anti-war movement in the country, with protests erupting nationwide, with pacifist sentiments spreading into the broader culture of the US. While there were some faults in its organization and strategic approach to opposing the government, the anti-war movement led to crucial changes in public policy.

As mentioned by Bingham for The Guardian, although the war lasted for a long time, “the movement opposing it unseated two presidents, ended the draft, dropped the voting age from 21 to 18 and convinced the Congress both to pass the War Powers Act in 1973 and to halt funding for the war in 1974.” The importance of the movement is also reflected in its giving start to other kinds of organizing that are relevant today, such as the Black power, women’s rights, and environmentalism.
