Primarily, the powerful princes, especially in German states, favored Protestantism because of their mercantile intentions. Namely, they were tired of the high taxation that Catholic Church imposed on them and preferred a more decentralized approach of Martin Luther. Thus, they supported Protestantism because its authorities did not demand payments from them due to the fact that they did not need any expensive places of worship.
