The media published and reported the confrontations between indigenous people and the Canadian government. The media reports created sympathy that inspired First Nation populations to join the protests in large numbers.
They also assisted in creating public awareness of events such as the Oka crisis, Burnt Church, Ipperwash, and Gustafsen. The Canadian government also relied on the media to discredit claims of excessive use of force by the military and police to limit public sympathy.
