Armed protests and blockages were apparent in the last decades of the 20th century due to feelings of discontent among the First Nations. Before the armed protests, indigenous people tried other means such as negotiations and courts to fight for their rights.
However, indigenous people felt that the Canadian government ignored some essential concerns and demands. Therefore, First Nations engaged in blockages and armed protests as the only approaches left to air their grievances.
