Confrontations and protests were common events, especially in the last decades of the 20th century. Belanger and Lackenbauer claim that protection and blockages resulted from Canada’s failure to resolve and address legitimate concerns of the First Nations.

Some sections of the primary resource also indicate that the protests and confrontations involved the use of excessive force, direct combat, and blockages. The Canadian government used military and police forces to suppress the protestors. Significantly, the direct confrontation led to the death of key leaders of protestors through shooting.
