The abiotic situation is developed from a community situation in primary succession, which may take up to 500 years. There must be some form of a disturbance called cataclysmic for primary succession to take place. In some instances, the soil sample may eliminate the prevailing disturbance. Hence, the soil formation process, which usually takes a relatively long period of time, may involve primary succession. Volcanic eruptions and glaciations which have accompanied the growth of certain communities are good examples of primary succession.

A secondary succession will take place within a community habitat where some level of destruction has already taken place, although this destruction may not be complete to the extent of eliminating life. When a community develops after a hurricane incidence, a secondary succession comes into being.

A case example of successional changes which take place in Midwestern old field succession is illustrated below.
