Discuss the facilitation, tolerance, and inhibition models of succession described by Connell and Slatyer. How do these models relate to the earlier floristic relay and initial floristic composition models?

In the facilitation model, the physical environment undergoes some form of modification due to the action of the pioneering species. This occurs so that the late succession can colonize the regime.

In the tolerance model, the physical environment also affects or drives the successional changes which are caused by each species. However, the growth to a mature stage is made difficult by a single species. Nevertheless, reproduction and colonization by other species
are still possible and can take place.

In the inhibition model, the type and nature of the colonization which was used at the initial stage determine the main outcome of the successional process. Although most species are able to colonize under this model, the type of species colonized will be of great choice.

All of these models have one thing in common: the physical environment plays a very important role as well as there is some degree of colonization that exists in each model, similar to the earlier floristic relay and initial floristic composition models.
