Nitrogen fixation is a process through which the elemental nitrogen found in the atmosphere is converted into various compounds of nitrogen like ammonia by natural or artificial processes. Certain microorganisms in the soil can also fix or convert nitrogen into useful compounds, which can be easily assimilated by other plants and animals. The presence of lighting can hasten the process of nitrogen fixation into the soil.

Ammonification refers to the bacterial action through which ammonia or ammonium compounds are produced when an organic matter is decomposed. Optimum temperature and high pressure are necessary if the end product is to be obtained after a short while.

Nitrification refers to the process whereby an organic compound receives a nitro group to form a nitrogenous compound, which is primarily organic in nature. The concentration of the nitrate group being added in addition to elevated temperatures determines the rate of nitrification.

Denitrification is an opposite process to nitrification, and it refers to a process through which a nitrogen-containing group is removed from an organic substance.
