Discuss human perturbations to the nitrogen cycle and their consequences.

One of the ways through which humans can perturb the nitrogen cycle is through the process of combustion or burning of fossil fuels that contain nitrogen compounds. The content of nitrogen in these fuels, as well as the temperature of combustion, determines how much of the gas is released into the atmosphere and therefore influences the entire nitrogen cycle. Another significant influence that can be injected into the nitrogen cycle is the release of nitrogen-containing wastes into the ecosystem. A good example is a human waste which contains notable levels of nitrogen compounds. Furthermore, the growing of crops which can fix nitrogen into the soil can also perturb the N cycle by reducing the amount the gaseous substance in the atmosphere. Additionally, the use of inorganic fertilizers can equally add more nitrogen into the ecosystem and therefore disturb the N cycle.
