Atherosclerosis is a disease or condition when one’s arteries harden and thicken due to plaque formation in the inner walls of the vessels, which leads to the narrowing of the pathways along which blood moves. These plaques are primarily comprised of fibrin, calcium, cellular waste substances, cholesterol, and other fatty molecules. Major risk factors are high blood pressure, physical inactivity, obesity, diabetes, and smoking. It is mainly treated through the use of medications as well as an introduction to lifestyle changes.
