List labor progress of the supine women with an epidural versus upright position in labor without pain medication.

Epidurals are the means which relieve the pain of a patient in labor. They are meant for women who have maternal cardiac or ophthalmologic disease and can be requested during both cesarean section and vaginal birth. They also mitigate the stress factor of labor for women who have been previously subjected to sexual violence (Brucker et al., 2018). During the second stage of labor, patients can be assigned two positions, either upright or non-upright, recumbent. Women who use upright rather than supine positions are expected to have shorter labor time and receive less external intervention, for example, in the form of epidurals. These women show more general satisfaction with their labor experience, although it can be perceived by some as a subjective factor to assess the labor progress in two positions. It is also believed that women who get epidurals should not be positioned uprightly, as they can temporarily lose their feelings to such an extent that any mobility becomes a severe challenge for them. However, the studies demonstrate quite contrary to what is believed to be accurate. For women who receive epidurals, the position does not play any role, as the results from upright positioning and recumbent one turn to be the same (Ondeck, 2014). Women who use upright position are also less inclined to have a cesarean fraction. It reduces additional risks for them as they can give vaginal birth to the child instead of performing C-section. Mortality rates from cesarean fraction are higher than the ones from vaginal birth (Ondeck, 2014).
