The main reason for AROM is to augment the labor process, which in typical situations does not require the intervention of medical personnel. Dystocia is a problematic labor condition that makes it hard for a woman to give birth to a child without the help of midwives and obstetricians. Dystocia can arise from various abnormalities and usually leads to a cesarean section. Amniotomy together with oxytocin for labor augmentation is proved to decrease the rate of cesarean section and time of labor, but only for women in the preterm group (Brucker et al., 2018). Although the mechanism behind amniotomy, which speeds up the whole process of labor, remains unclear, it is proved that the rupture of membranes increases the level of prostaglandins and oxytocin. In its turn, this increase leads to stronger contractions and faster dilation of cervix (Smyth, Markham & Dowswell, 2013).
