It can be argued that the symbol of medieval China is the scholar-gentry while in Japan it is the Samurai warrior. How do you account for the difference between the two societies?

China embraced scholar-gentry because of the Confucian tradition, while the Japanese had the Samurai warrior because they failed to embrace Confucian tradition. Confucian tradition encourages society to adhere to social and ethical philosophy rather than a religious guide for its people. The clarification of scholars like Dong Zhongshu, who lived in the Han dynasty era between 179-104 BCE, showed that the Chinese society strongly depended on Confucianism.
