In Ming China, why did European traders pay for Chinese silks and porcelains in gold or silver instead of exchanging trade goods?

The Europeans paid the Chinese in gold or silver because the Europeans had nothing else that attracted the Chinese. The Europeans had wool and silk, although they could not give the Chinese because they had silk. The Chinese saw the European trade goods as inferior hence the reason why they did want them.
