Echolocation is a sonar system used by over a thousand species to locate food in an environment with little to no light, most famously bats and dolphins. These animals emit sound waves that bounce off objects, returning an echo that provides information about the latter’s distance and size.

The Doppler effect is a phenomenon wherein a sound moving in your direction is higher-pitched and louder than one moving in the opposite direction. In order to compensate for this, when animals are chasing a target and changing speed, they also change the frequency of their emitted sound waves to keep it within the range of a normal echolocation call.
