The Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s sought to end segregation and denial of the rights of African Americans and other minority groups within the United States. The abolition of slavery following the Civil War granted blacks citizenship and equal rights under the constitution, but the decades after the war saw the persistence of discrimination against blacks, as well as the passage of Jim Crow laws in the many southern states. Individual and collective activities spearheaded by members of the black community to fight this segregation created a national dialogue on African American civil rights and resulted in the passage of several fundamental laws and rulings designed to prohibit racial discrimination.
