Do you think that the tactics and strategies that civil rights activists used in the 1960s would apply to today’s racial and ethnic conflicts? Why or why not?

Most of the activities of the Civil Rights Movement involved non-violent acts of protest, such as boycotts, marches, and sit-ins. Prominent examples include the boycott of the Montgomery bus system following the arrest of Rosa Parks and the sit-ins organized by black students at various stores to agitate for desegregation. This strategy of non-violent acts of civil disobedience and public disturbance is referred to as direct action. These actions can be applied to current social conflicts. Social media protest is based on non-violence and has the effect of creating enhanced awareness on racial issues. It also acts as a barometer of public opinion, thus spurring governmental authorities to take remedial actions.
