Some industry experts feel that it’s acceptable to appropriate symbols from another culture even if the buyer does not know their original meaning. They argue that even in the host society there is often disagreement about these meanings. What do you think?

Cultural appropriation or cooptation of symbols is common in mass marketing. It is an aspect that depends on the symbols and their meaning, and it is certainly a complex issue. For example, some symbols may have controversial or even unethical meanings, and in this case, they should not be used. Other symbols, such as many religious or cultural ones, have been adopted into marketing, thus causing them to lose a sense of sacredness or develop an alternate meaning. Nevertheless, sometimes, marketing uses the symbol more for its design and appeal factor rather than an attempt to use its meaning. Therefore, it is appropriate but should be done with great consideration to the symbol and cultural background.
